Originally settled back in 1827, Burnie is a port town on the northwest coast of Tasmania in Tasmania with a population of 21,000. The main industry in Burnie is paper and it is the largest maker of paper in Australia with the main mill in the centre of town. With its location on Emu Bay, Burnie is a favorite destination for holiday travelers and tourists and is popular as a seaport and seaside setting. This provides many opportunities for deck chair cruising and shore tours to explore the attractions in the region.

The first tour one should take is to see the main attractions of Burnie. This starts with a visit to the Pioneer Village which brings back to life the way of life in Burnie in the 1880s. Here one can see in the enclosed village over 30,000 items on display as well as a dentist’s office, carpenter’s shop, wash house, print shop, creamery, smithy, post office, stage depot and boot shop as they were in those days. Next is a stop to the Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden which has an international reputation as an award-winning rhododendron garden.  It has a unique design which boasts over 20,000 rhododendron plants and other select plants in a setting that showcases the countries from which they originate. The last stop is the Maker’s Workshop for Creative Paper Handmade Paper tour where one has the opportunity to make paper by hand under the guidance of informative and experienced paper makers.

A tour that takes ones outside of Burnie through farming regions and past small coastal towns is to Woolnorth, a 22,000 hectare region in the northwest part of Tasmania. This area was formed in 1824 under a charter from King George IV and is the property of the Van Dieman’s Land Company, the last Royal Charter Company still in operation. Here one can take in what some consider the cleanest air in the world, go back in time to learn about the early history of the property and explore the contemporary Cookhouse Cottage. Another destination of this tour is the charming town of Stanley which is reached from Woolnorth by travelling along some pastoral landscapes many of which are legally planted with opium poppies.

Another tour in the Tasmanian countryside visits such quaint seaside villages as Penguin and Devonport and countryside villages such as Preston Falls. Time in Penguin is spent walking past its roadside gardens and penguin bins and through Hiscutt Park which has a Dutch theme as demonstrated by its tulips in the springtime and a working mill all year long. In Devonport, located at the mouth of the Mersey River, one can see fine old buildings and workers’ cottages from the early days and stroll through the town to refresh oneself from the local cafes. The final stop is Preston Falls where one is afforded the opportunity to walk through the bush to view these magnificent falls.

There are many other tours in this area to enjoy that range from the natural sights such as Cradle Mountain National Park to the historic Don River Railway in Devonport. Whatever your pleasure, shore tours in Burnie are sure to please.
